Le bonobo (Pan paniscus) est certainement l'espèce la moins connue des hominidés, les autres étant le gorille, le chimpanzé commun (Pan troglodytes), l'orang-outan et l'Homme. Il a été officiellement reconnu comme une espèce à part entière en 1929. Les bonobos vivent en groupes d'une centaine d'individus dans les forêts tropicales de la République démocratique du Congo. Essentiellement végétarien, il se nourrit de fruits mûrs, de plantes et parfois d'insectes.
